The Lungs
FINDING IMPORTANT NERVES AND VESSELS
- Lungs (At the hilum of the lungs you will find all the vessels)
- Left lung
- The left pulmonary artery is the most superior vessel, superior to the pulmonary veins and the main bronchi. *Distinguish the main bronchus from arteries or veins. The main bronchus has hard cartilage in the walls.
- Between the pulmonary artery and the main bronchus you will find the bronchial artery.
- Inferior to the main bronchus is the inferior pulmonary vein, and anterior to the main bronchus is the superior pulmonary vein. *Compare the thickness of the veins and arteries. Arteries have thicker walls and veins have thinner walls.
- Right lung
- The right pulmonary artery is anterior to the main bronchus and superior to the pulmonary veins.
- The bronchial artery is posterior to the main bronchus at the inferior aspect.
- The superior pulmonary vein is anterior and a little superior to the inferior pulmonary vein by the esophageal impression.
